It’s been a number of months since our last update and we’re approaching the one-year mark of operating the first electric truck in Recycle BC’s network. The data provides valuable insight into the transformative potential of these vehicles.
The electric truck transports material from depots to one of our material recovery facilities in the Metro Vancouver area.
Environmental Impact:
The electric truck is a powerful and eco-friendly alternative to traditional gas-guzzlers. Notably, it has eliminated significant tailpipe emissions in its first 8 months of operation, resulting in a reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) by 14,536 tonnes—equivalent to taking 3 cars off the road for a year.
Cost Savings:
At the eight-month mark, our data shows a significant cost savings compared to the diesel equivalent, with no major issues or unexpected maintenance costs reported.
Performance and Power:
The electric truck has proven itself by meeting all the requirements expected of its diesel-powered counterpart, including distance traveled and materials hauled. While the range during summer months surpasses that of winter, adaptable routes ensure seamless service without any impact on operational efficiency.
The results after the first eight months of operation of this electric truck are exceptional and point to the potential of electric vehicles to reduce the emissions from transporting materials in the Recycle BC program. From cost savings to environmental benefits, electric trucks are proving to be a sustainable and efficient choice with a positive impact on the bottom line and the planet.
For those interested in delving deeper into the realm of zero-emission vehicles, the Province of BC has released a consultation paper.
