Project overview
On November 15, 2021, Recycle BC began a 6-month recycling collection pilot project to collect soft plastics and foam packaging from selected households in West Vancouver.
This project aimed to explore the feasibility of collecting flexible plastics and foam packaging (previously only accepted for drop off at depots) from homes using two collection boxes or bags.
How It Worked
Detailed information about the pilot was delivered to participating homes early-November, along with bags and boxes for collection. Residents use the bags or boxes provided to set out flexible plastics and foam packaging at the curb on collection day until the pilot concluded in May 2022.
Soft Plastics
Soft plastics includes plastic bags, plastic overwrap, and other flexible plastic packaging. Material must be clean and empty for collection.

Foam Packaging
Foam packaging includes foam meat trays (with the plastic wrap and absorbent pad removed), delivery cushion packaging, egg cartons, and take-out containers.
- See full list of accepted foam packaging.
Results
Recycle BC collected more flexible plastics from West Vancovuer households during the pilot period compared to during a non-pilot period. There were significant cost implications to collect this additional material from homes, however, it was a successful pilot and provided good insight and information about the feasibility of collecting this material from homes.
