In January 2026, we communicated that Interchange Recycling (the Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO), which manages automotive materials like used oil) will be expanding its product list to cover all automotive containers (packaging). As a result, automotive containers would no longer be managed by, and therefore removed from, the Recycle BC program. In this scenario, BC producers will no longer have reporting or fee obligations starting with their 2026 supply data/sales reported in 2027 Annual Supply Report to Recycle BC. This change would align with when producers will begin reporting on the new harmonized reporting categories in 2027, and more information about this change will be included in new reporting resources.
Upon receiving further feedback to this approach in January and February 2026, Recycle BC is working with relevant producer responsibility organizations, producers, industry associations and the Ministry to confirm any changes to material reporting and management obligations. We will work in partnership to optimize the system for consumer convenience, cost control, and overall program performance.
Automotive containers will continue to be reported in the upcoming 2026 Annual Supply Report (2025 supply data /sales invoiced in 2027), due May 31, 2026.
We appreciate your continued engagement and patience as we work to ensure that programs evolve in a manner that best serves our members and supports regulatory obligations. We will provide further updates as this work progresses.
