General FAQs

In 2018, the City of North Vancouver decided to transition responsibility for recycling collection services to Recycle BC for single family curbside residences and multi-family buildings. The City of North Vancouver joined the Recycle BC program in May 2014, and – like many communities in the province – was receiving a financial incentive from Recycle BC to provide residential recycling collection. Transitioning responsibility for recycling collection to Recycle BC allows the City of North Vancouver to allocate staff and resources to other high priority programs.

Recycle BC is a non-profit organization responsible for residential packaging and printed paper recycling throughout British Columbia, servicing over 1.8 million households. Recycle BC works in partnership with more than 160 collection and post-collection partners, including local governments, First Nations, non-profits and private companies. Recycle BC ensures materials are collected from households and depots, sorted and responsibly recycled. The Recycle BC program is funded by over 1,200 businesses that include retailers, manufacturers and restaurants that supply packaging and printed paper to BC residents, shifting recycling costs away from homeowners.

Recycle BC already provides direct service in many areas of the province including the Cities of Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Langley, Coquitlam, Revelstoke, Prince George and Quesnel; the Village of Anmore; the University Endowment Lands; and Regional Districts of North Okanagan, Central Kootenay and Kootenay Boundary.

Recycle BC awarded its curbside collection contract to Emterra Environmental. Emterra Environmental will provide weekly pick up of residential recycling for residents living in single family homes, as well as multi-family dwellings.

Yes. There are no changes to the materials that can be recycled. You can set out the same materials you did before, using your blue box for hard plastic, metal and paper containers, grey box for glass bottles and jars and yellow bag for newsprint, paper, and cardboard. For information on which materials are accepted go to RecycleBC.ca/Materials or refer to the recycling guide on this page.

There is no charge for the basic recycling collection service. The Recycle BC program is funded by the businesses that supply packaging and paper to BC residents, shifting recycling costs away from taxpayers.

Curbside Recycling FAQs

Recycle BC is not responsible for garbage and green waste. Your municipality will continue to manage garbage and green waste service. There is no change to your garbage and green waste service and your recycling, garbage and green waste collection days will align. For more information on garbage and green waste please visit your Municipality’s website.

There will be no change to your curbside recycling collection schedule, the boxes/bag you use or the materials you can set out for collection. There is new customer service contact information.

You should continue to set out your recycling between 5:30 am and 7:30 am on collection day. However, the pick-up routes may have changed, so it is possible that the time of day your recycling is collected will change. Please set out your recycling between 5:30 am and 7:30 am to ensure it isn’t missed.

Yes, if you’ve signed up to receive reminders with the CityCollect, or through the City of North Vancouver website, you will continue to receive reminders.  If you currently don’t receive recycling collection reminders, but would like to download the Recycle BC app on the App Store or Google Play or at RecycleBC.ca/App.

Multi-family Recycling FAQs

Starting July 1, 2020, Recycle BC will begin to directly manage residential recycling collection in City of North Vancouver. Recycle BC’s selected contractor for these services is Emterra Environmental .

  • Weekly recycling collection will continue.
  • Recycling set out guidelines will remain the same.
  • This will not impact garbage or organics collection.
  • Collection days may have changed for some multi-family properties. If your building pulls its own carts to the service location on collection day, this must be done according to the new schedule.
  • If your location requires a cart pullout service of greater than 30 metres by the recycling contractor, this is considered an extra service with applicable charges.

The City and Recycle BC have communicated these changes to those affected in June.

Collection days may have changed for some multi-family properties. If your building pulls its own carts to the service location on collection day, this must be done according to the new schedule.

No. These changes do not impact your garbage and green bin collection service.

No action is required on your part to continue receiving service at this time. Your building has been transitioned automatically to service by Recycle BC. If your building requires a key, fob or security code to access recycling carts, the City of North Vancouver has transferred possession of the key, fob or security code directly to Recycle BC and their contractor, Emterra.

You are strongly encouraged to provide your building’s contact information directly to Recycle BC so we can work with you on details related to servicing your building. This will ensure we can communicate directly with you about any changes that may impact your recycling collection service, including changes to the collection schedule, or if there are any issues servicing your location. If Recycle BC is not able to efficiently communicate with you, this may delay the timely resolution of any service issues.

This is particularly important if your location is likely to require a pull out service of your recycling carts greater than 30 meters, as this is considered an extra service with applicable charges. This service will not continue after July 1 if appropriate arrangements have not been made. To ensure Recycle BC and Emterra Environmental can contact you about this, we will require contact information.

The appropriate contact(s) may be a property management company, a building superintendent or custodian, an appointed resident that oversees building services, a building strata, or a combination of different types of contacts.

To provide contact information to Recycle BC, please complete the online contact form here.

Yes. However, please note that if you choose a recycling services provider other than Recycle BC’s contractor, Emterra Environmental, you will be opting out of the Recycle BC program and Recycle BC will not off-set recycling collection costs for your residential building.

You will be responsible for negotiating rates and contract terms directly with any new service provider(s). Your new service provider will also need to provide new recycling carts for your building, for which there may be a fee. A different service provider may also use a different sorting system and collect different materials. It is your responsibility to talk to your hauler about what materials are collected to ensure their services meet your recycling needs.

You will need to notify the City of North Vancouver. You will be asked to confirm your intention to opt out of the Recycle BC program, provide the name of your selected contractor and your contract start date. Following that start date, the City of North Vancouver and Recycle BC will no longer be responsible for providing your collection service.

Under Recycle BC’s contract with Emterra Environmental, base level recycling collection services (i.e. weekly collection) will continue at no charge to you after the transition.

Charges may still apply if you wish to receive services over and above weekly recycling service. Examples of extra services include:

  • Pull-out service of recycling carts; if the distance is more than 30 metres
  • Collection service more than once a week; and
  • Additional or replacement carts.

You are strongly encouraged to provide your building’s contact information directly to Recycle BC so we can work with you directly on these details, as applicable. See above for further information.

The City of North Vancouver joined the Recycle BC program in May 2014, and, like many communities in the province, was receiving a financial incentive from Recycle BC to manage residential recycling collection. It did this by hiring a contractor to collect the recycling, and Municipal staff oversaw and managed the contract. Residential recycling is funded by Recycle BC member companies that supply packaging and paper into the BC market, shifting costs away from taxpayers.

You can contact Recycle BC’s collection contractor for missed pick-ups, replacement boxes or bags or schedule questions.
