MMBC expansion of flat-fee categories simplifies steward reporting

Multi-Material BC has introduced new flat-fee categories for stewards supplying between 5,000 and 15,000 kg of material to the residential market annually. The categories provide more stewards with increased reporting efficiency and can be used for 2017 reporting that will inform 2018 invoices.

Online Assessment Tool
The Online Assessment Tool makes it simple for businesses to determine if they are eligible to pay a flat fee based on the quantities of packaging and paper product supplied annually to residents of British Columbia. It enables eligible stewards to meet their 2017 reporting obligation without having to go through the detailed data gathering and weighing of their packaging and paper product by answering a few questions to determine whether they meet the flat-fee criteria. Eligible stewards can choose to pay the flat fee with no requirement to produce a detailed annual report, or they can provide a detailed report of the amount of packaging and paper product supplied and pay stewardship fees in accordance with MMBC’s fee schedule.

Category and Fee Information
Businesses supplying less than 1,000 kg of packaging and paper product continue to be exempt from registration and reporting. Low-volume stewards will continue to have two flat-fee categories: 1,000 to 2,499 kg and 2,500 to 4,999 kg. The new flat-fee categories are: 5,000 to 9,999 kg and 10,000 to 15,000 kg. As usual, all fee rates for the following year are set in the fall.

Businesses that supply more than 15,000 kg of packaging and paper product are required to submit detailed annual reports.

Next steps for reporting
Current stewards can review their previous reports to determine if they are eligible for flat fees. New stewards who believe they qualify for one of the flat-fee categories should confirm with the Online Assessment Tool, proceed to the WeRecycle Portal and register, complete a Member Agreement and then follow reporting guidelines.
