Recycle BC is pleased to announce a significant milestone in the continued evolution of British Columbia’s recycling system. Beginning June 1, 2026, Recycle BC will transition post-collection services to in-house management.
This transition represents a strategic step forward, enabling full operational oversight from receiving and logistics through to processing and end-market management. By bringing these functions in-house, Recycle BC is strengthening system performance, improving transparency, and building a more resilient and efficient recycling system for the future.
Investing in the Future of Recycling Infrastructure
A key component of this transition is significant investment in recycling infrastructure to support both current needs and long-term growth.
Urban Impact will upgrade its existing material recovery facility (MRF) in New Westminster. The facility will begin supporting the system immediately, with planned improvements carried out over the next year. Importantly, these upgrades will be completed without any interruption to service, ensuring continuity for collection partners and residents.
Miller Waste Systems will design and construct a new, state-of-the-art MRF in Delta, with completion anticipated in 2028. This facility will play a critical role in expanding long-term processing capacity. It will incorporate advanced sorting technology capable of handling both single-stream and multi-stream materials, improving material recovery rates and overall system efficiency. In addition, the facility will include a dedicated education space to support community engagement, tours and increased public awareness of recycling processes.

A Phased and Coordinated Transition
Recycle BC has designed this transition to prioritize continuity and minimize disruption across the network. While post-collection services will move in-house, the day-to-day processes that partners and residents rely on will remain consistent.
To support a phased transition, Recycle BC is working closely with partners to ensure a smooth and coordinated rollout. GFL will provide interim processing services at its Richmond material recovery facility while Miller Waste Systems’ new Delta facility is under development.
Looking Ahead
This transition is more than an operational shift — it is a long-term investment in the strength and sustainability of British Columbia’s recycling system. By enhancing infrastructure, improving oversight, and reinforcing partnerships, Recycle BC is positioning the program to better serve communities for years to come.
Recycle BC extends its sincere appreciation to all partners for their continued collaboration, expertise, and support during this important transition. Together, we are building a more robust and future-ready recycling system for British Columbia.
