The Multi-Material BC (MMBC) packaging and printed paper program is the first program of its kind in Canada. That is, ours is the first program in Canada that is financed entirely through stewards (the companies that supply packaging and printed paper to BC residents).
Our program is also the first packaging and printed paper recycling program to have a list of materials that are accepted consistently province-wide. This means that residents moving from one community to another don’t have to relearn what can be recycled (though how materials are collected can vary, so residents might need to learn different sorting requirements).
Additionally, many materials accepted in MMBC’s recycling program are being collected from curbside and multi-family households for the first time, including milk cartons, paper beverage cups, plastic drink cups, foil take-out containers, aerosol containers, plant pots, and more.
And MMBC has created the largest wasteshed (an area with a common recycling system) in North America, resulting in efficiencies that were previously not possible.
We’ve only just begun, so watch out for more firsts in the coming months.
