Businesses who are stewards or wish to become voluntary stewards and have yet to register with Recycle BC can do so on the WeRecycle Portal. Our national team is available to assist you with the registration process either via email at stewards@recyclebc.ca or by phone at 1-877-667-2626. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have related to the Recycle BC program or your obligation as a Steward.
The British Columbia (BC) Recycling Regulation (B.C. Reg. 449/2004 – the “Regulation”) under the Environmental Management Act requires that, as of May 2014, every producer of packaging and paper product that supplies material into the BC residential marketplace must operate, or be a member of, an approved plan concerning the end-of-life management of their products.
All members of Recycle BC’s program, including resident and voluntary stewards, are required to sign a Membership Agreement.
A voluntary steward is a non-resident brand owner who supplies packaging and/or paper product into a regulated jurisdiction and has elected to assume responsibility for its material.
The BC Ministry of Environment (MOE) has passed a regulation that exempts some categories of small businesses from the obligation to assume responsibility for the recycling of their Packaging and Printed Paper (PPP) under the BC Recycling Regulation.
