We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the Flexible Plastics Collection Program, a groundbreaking partnership between Recycle BC and the Vancouver School Board. This May, 17,000 students across 53 schools participated, setting a new standard for recycling in Vancouver schools.
Program Highlights
Participation: 50% of schools in the Vancouver School Board district joined the initiative.
Student Involvement: 17,000 students actively participated, each collecting an average of 25 pieces of flexible plastic.
Collection Success: Over 3,000 kg of flexible plastics were collected.
Recovery Rate: Schools collected about 41% of what was supplied to households for flexible plastics, double the typical 20% recovery rate for flexible plastics.
This initiative provided students with hands-on experience in recycling, teaching them the importance of sustainable practices. By bringing flexible plastics from home, students learned what materials can be recycled and the impact they can have on reducing waste.
Continuing the Momentum
While this program has concluded, the commitment to recycling doesn’t stop here. Flexible plastics can still be returned to depots or London Drugs stores. Recycle BC offers a network of depots where residents can drop off packaging and paper free of charge. Find a depot location nearest you or download the Recycle BC app for more information.
We commend the Vancouver School Board for their dedication to sustainability and thank all the students, staff, and community members who made this program a success.
