Frequently Asked Questions - Summerland
How should I consolidate flexible plastics before bringing it to the depot? Does the depot want me to put the material into (single use) plastic bags for collection?
Residents are welcome to use any container available at their household (i.e., Rubbermaid bin, reusable shopping bag etc.) to consolidate the material prior to taking the flexible plastics to the depot. There is no need to purchase single use plastic bags such as garbage bags or kitchen liners to collect your flexible plastics.
Can I put the flexible plastics into my recycling cart?
No, flexible plastics are not accepted for curbside collection in your community. Please bring your flexible plastics to your local recycling depot, Summerland Landfill at 17202 Bathville Rd, Summerland, BC.
For information on other locations accepting flexible plastics, please visit: https://recyclebc.ca/where-can-i-recycle/find-a-depot/
Why are flexible plastics not accepted at the curbside in my community? Why do I have to take flexible plastics to the depot?
Flexible plastics needs to be collected separately from other recyclables such as paper and rigid plastic containers because they behave very differently during the recycling process. In most of the communities in BC, flexible plastics are currently accepted at depots only. In Summerland, the District manages the curbside recycling program. Currently paper and mixed containers are accepted at the curbside in a blue cart whereas other packaging types (including flexible plastics) are accepted at the depot only.
