ADDRESSING QUESTIONS ABOUT DRAFT UPDATED LIST OF PACKAGING AND PRINTED PAPER

Wet Strength Boxboard Commonly used in boxboard packaging applications where the package could get wet but must retain its strength.
Moulded Pulp Used for egg cartons and packaging for electronic components (as an alternative to foamed polystyrene).
Paper Cup (polycoated liner, cold waxed, cold 2-sided polycoated) Hot and cold food and drink ‘paper cups’ come with different liner materials, depending on what they are intended to contain (e.g. hot or cold drinks, soups, chili, etc.).
Aseptic Containers Multiple layered (of paper, plastic and aluminum foil but primarily paper by weight) food and beverage containers (e.g. drink boxes, soy and rice milk, soups).
Polycoated Boxboard Commonly used in detergent and soap packaging to protect the contents from becoming damp and clumping.
Multi-laminated Paper Packaging Specialty paper packaging that has more than two layers of fibre plus adhesives and/or laminates.
Spiral Wound Cans (steel ends) Containers where the body is made from paper fibre laminated with metal film and the ends are made of steel (e.g. potato chip cans, frozen juice cans).
Bimetal Containers/Aerosols Containers made from more than one type of metal and may also include plastic parts and paper packaging.
HDPE, PP, PS and Other Planter Pots Plastic planter pots are being collected in some BC jurisdictions now with an estimated 75% of BC residents having access either via curbside or depot collection.  Soil and potting medium residue remaining on plant pots is similar to food residue remaining on plastic food containers.
PS Bottles, Clamshells (rigid and EPS), PS Trays (rigid and EPS), PS Tubs & Lids (rigid and HIPS), PS Cold Drink Cups Polystyrene comes in both a rigid form, used for clear clamshells and some yogurt containers, and in a foamed form, both extruded polystyrene (XPS) used for meat trays, egg cartons, foam cups and foam clamshells and expanded polystyrene (EPS) used for cushion packaging. Polystyrene is also made into films (that are not compatible with polyethylene-based films), high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) used for some product casings and oriented polystyrene (OPS) used as bakery box lids.  PS Bottles, Clamshells (rigid), Trays (rigid), Tubs and Lids (rigid and HIPS) and Cold Drink Cups (rigid) are included in the list to be collected at curbside and depot while PS EPS is included in the list to be collected at depot.
PLA Bottles, Clamshells and Cold Drink Cups Polylactic acid is a thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch, tapioca roots or sugarcane. PLA can be used for bottles or other plastic packaging.   These materials are excluded from the proposed list of PPP to be collected.
PHA Bottles Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are linear polyesters produced by bacterial fermentation of sugar or lipids. These plastics are biodegradeable and are used in the production of bioplastics.  PHA can be used for bottles or other plastic packaging.  This material is excluded from the proposed list of PPP to be collected.
EVOH Films Ethylene and vinyl alcohol-based barriers films used in various packaging applications. This material is excluded from the proposed list of PPP to be collected.
