Your privacy is important to us

Recycle BC (also known as MMBC Recycling Inc.) is committed to protecting your privacy and personal information through appropriate information management practices. We collect, use, retain, disclose and dispose of personal information in accordance with the applicable legislation and this privacy statement. This privacy statement applies to personal information we collect or are provided, excluding in the context of employment and our application that is available for smart phones, tablets and similar devices (the “App”). The App has a separate privacy statement that applies to personal information collected through the App, available in the relevant app store and in the App. Employee privacy is addressed in our Employee Handbook.

Definition of personal information

Personal information is information that is recorded about an identifiable person, not including contact information (which is the information used to contact a person at a place of business). Personal information includes such things as a person’s name, address, birthdate, email address, phone number, etc.

Information we collect and use

Much of the personal information we process is necessary to provide our services and fulfil obligations set out in BC’s Recycling Regulation on behalf of our members. As we do not collect sensitive information, we rely on your implied consent in most situations. The chart below summarizes what information we collected and how we use it.

Protection of personal information

We protect your personal information by making reasonable security arrangements against such risks as unauthorized access, collection, use, disclosure or disposal.

Sharing of personal information

We share your personal information with our employees, contractors, consultants and other parties such as third-party companies that assist us in providing our services, including website and app developers and hosting services. Below is a non-exhaustive list of the third parties that may have access to personal information under our control.

Disclosure of aggregated information

Information collected automatically may be aggregated and disclosed in our reports, publications or communications. Disclosure of this nature will not include any identifiable personal information (e.g. total number of visitors to our website in a calendar year).

Disclosure for other reasons

We may disclose personal information if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with our legal requirements or with legal process served on us, to protect and defend our rights or property, or in urgent circumstances to protect the personal safety of any person. We may also disclose your personal information in connection with a third party acquiring a substantial part of our operations or any of our affiliates or subsidiaries, including by merger or acquisition, amalgamation, corporate reorganization or restructuring or a sale of assets, including as part of the related due diligence.

You can request to review any personal information collected about you by using the contact information below. We will consider any requests to correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information and meet our legal obligations to you.

Our website includes links to external websites. Once you leave our website, this privacy statement does not apply. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of external websites.

Disclosure outside of Canada

We may disclose personal information to third parties both in and outside of Canada, and as a result, your personal information may be collected, used, disclosed or stored in another country, including the United States of America. Laws relating to privacy vary between countries, and your personal information may be processed in a country with less stringent than the laws of Canada. Personal information may be accessible to governments, courts, or law enforcement, national security authorities or and regulatory agencies of these countries in accordance with applicable laws.

Retaining your personal information

We only store personal information as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which the personal information was collected, to conduct our operations and maintain an appropriate historical record of our relationship with you, or in order to comply with applicable laws, whichever is longer, after which time the personal information is destroyed or erased. We may, instead of destroying or erasing your personal information, make it anonymous such that it cannot be associated with, or tracked back to, you.
